Golf Schools Speed up Learning
Learning a new golf swing skill requires regular feed back. While a single golf lesson will give you insight into a swing weakness and the correction required for improvement, it seldom results in the permanent swing change golfers seek. Consistent feedback is a key to effective swing change. Verbal feedback from an expert instructor leads to lasting improvements, helps students learn to learn and enhances student confidence in their ability to learn.
Cahill Golf Schools at the Cimarron Golf Resort in Palm Springs Ca conducted an informal experiment on the effects of feedback. Students were taught a new skill. After instruction each student was able to accurately demonstrate and verbally describe the new skill. Students then independently practiced the skill until they were certain it was being performed correctly. High speed video recorded students performing the motion. Not a single student performed the motion correctly. Subsequent instruction utilizing interactive video feedback and consistent verbal feedback resulted in each student mastering the skill. Providing specific skill related feed back speeds up the learning process, as shown by numerous research studies.
Training aids, while popular as a form of feedback, have not been shown to enhance learning over the long haul. Studies indicate that on a regular ongoing basis students learn at the same rate with or without training aids. Training aids do however have proven initial skill learning enhancement value. For example auditor feedback has been shown to speed up the initial learning process. After the introductory phase the helpful effects disappear.
Kvest and Advance Motion Measurement are two golf companies specializing in auditory feedback. Wireless sensors are used by both companies to measure position changes during a golf swing. An auditory signal is provided as either negative or positive feedback. Scientific controlled studies have not been performed proving or disproving the advantages of these devices. However the majority of auditory feedback studies indicate that introductory skill learning should be enhanced.
Expert instructors understand the importance of frequent ongoing feedback. Students goals can be achieved by an expert instructor who takes advantage of ongoing frequent feedback. The expert golf instructor accurately identifies the students starting point, demonstrates and describes, encourages, consistently assesses and provides feedback.
